Finding free legal advice

There are several situations when you might find legal advice useful or even necessary.

If you aren’t able to pay for it you may be able to find support via the Pro-Help service provided by Quartet Community Foundation. This will mostly be useful where you have some time to find a volunteer and work with them, so it won’t be a useful source of one-off quick advice.

You may find that your current insurance includes access to legal advice. You will pay for this through your premiums but this will most likely be at a very good rate when compared with the cost of one-off queries.

Many legal practices offer a short free consultation but this will only be for certain areas of law.

LawWorks develops resources which provide general information for not-for-profit organisations on specific areas of law, to enable them to spot and avoid potential legal problems.

Free Talks are short online videos about common legal issues faced by small not-for-profit organisations. The videos are all free to watch and aim to help you when making important decisions.

Topics covered include:

  • Setting up a CIO
  • Basics of property law
  • An introduction to the Charity Tribunal
  • Managing Redundancies
  • Basics of Contract
  • An Employer’s Guide to the Employment Tribunal
  • Data Protection and Websites
  • Employing Someone New
  • Amending Governing Documents and Constitutions
  • Charity Structure
