Fundraising Regulator publishes new guidance in response to coronavirus appeals

22 April, 2020

The Fundraising Regulator has published new guidance on setting up a fundraising appeal.

The guidance has been developed in response to the large number of members of the public seeking to raise funds in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Priya Warner, Head of Policy at the Fundraising Regulator said: “Many people are thinking about how they can ‘give something back’, while still observing government guidelines.”

“If you’re new to setting up a fundraising appeal, you may not realise that there are specific things you need to do to make sure your fundraising is legal and ethical, and has the best chance of success.

“To help you get things right, we have produced some guidance which you should read before setting up an appeal.”

The guidance sets out ten factors which should be considered before launching an appeal. It also recommends that, where possible, people try to work with existing charities and also consider whether or not their appeal actually constitutes setting up a charity.
