This week plans were announced to expand the NHS Volunteer Responders scheme in England into social care – this will involve a drive to recruit volunteers to take on social care tasks such as delivering medication or tackling isolation and loneliness via social visits.

In February 2010, a major review of health equity in England was published, called Fair Society, Healthy Lives (The Marmot Review).

 

Forced Marriage Training (CPD accredited – 1 hour) with The Sky Project, a registered Bristol charity working to reduce the number of forced marriage cases in Bristol and the South West.

Sabeena Pirooz will be running another CPD accredited training session for 1 hour. Tickets are £10, plus a small administration fee, which will go straight back into the charity.

Councils will no longer be required to levy the bedroom tax in cases where it will breach an individual’s human rights - including cases where a person has severe disabilities.

This follows a ruling by the UK Supreme Court which found that the tax breached the human right to a home of a man whose housing benefit was reduced by 14%.

The man, known as RR, has a severely disabled partner and needs the additional bedroom to store medical equipment.

The Centre for Ageing Better has launched a new report on Ageing and Mobility.

The research found that current transport systems are complex and fragmented and present a barrier to better ageing interventions. 

It found that there is a need for local and national government to own the problem and that leadership and collaboration are required for sustainable change.

Bristol City Council is consulting on the future commissioning of ‘help when people need it’ services.

The council is looking to procure these services for two main groups; those aged 18-64 and those aged 55+, as well as other citizens who live in the community and are not supported by the working age adults provision.
