ACH was founded in Bristol in 2008 to provide supported housing to refugees who had recently received their five years leave to remain.

They have grown rapidly, and are approaching a turnover of £10m, and are now offering services far beyond Bristol in cities like Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton. As a result, ACH are now strengthening their board to enhance both capacity and capability.

They are now a social enterprise comprised of a diverse group of strategists and researchers led by lived experience. They provide tailored integration services that not only help individuals, but also disrupt the systems that have entrenched inequalities in our society. Their vision is to empower refugees and vulnerable migrants who reside in the UK to lead self-sufficient and ambitious lives.

They now have a track record of delivering effective support services that give refugees and migrants the tools they need to succeed. In 2021 alone, They helped 1000+ people to achieve their personal goals and lead fulfilling lives in their new country.

For these Non-Executive roles, we are seeking the following skills. We are looking for three individuals who possess a senior track record in organisational development or strategic leadership from either an executive or non-executive role and have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • One person with social housing management or regulatory experience;
  • One person with customer services or organisational operations and management; or
  • One person with business growth and transformation/IT systems/data, for example, a commercial background with specialist in high growth business, from start up to/incubator.

All candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding and some insights on the following:

  • Refugee lived experiences.
  • Experience of operating effectively at senior levels within an organisation, and a proven ability in influencing decision making.
  • Empathy with the purpose of the social housing and/or direct experience of working in the sector with knowledge of refugees and addressing deprivation.

The role is multi-faceted reporting to the Chair and responsibilities will include:

  • Adding value to the organisation by contributing experience, expertise and insight.
  • Establishing clear objectives to deliver the agreed board plans and strategy and regularly review performance against those objectives.
  • Ensuring the long-term sustainability of ACH and its training subsidiary company, Himilo.
  • Ensuring that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and that the board is kept fully informed through timely and relevant information.
  • Promoting the highest standards of corporate governance in compliance with the Economic and Consumer Standards of the Regulator for Social Housing and the NHF Code of Governance.
