About this event

Many people who struggle with mental health issues have experienced childhood abuse and other forms of complex trauma. As well as more commonly understood types of mental health difficulties, many also show signs of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD), personality disorders, and dissociative disorders.

This course, for professionals and others working with survivors, will enable participants to understand the particular challenges faced by people who have experienced complex trauma, and to find ways of supporting survivors on their journey of recovery.

Topics covered will include:
- Identifying complex trauma
- The impact of childhood abuse
- Understanding dissociation
- Complex trauma & attachment
- Models of ‘the Traumatised Self’
- A framework for recovery

The course consists of 4 x Thursday morning online sessions, during October 2024:

3rd Oct 2024 - 9:30am - 1pm
10th Oct 2024 - 9:30am - 1pm
17th Oct 2024 - 9:30am - 1pm
24th Oct 2024 - 9:30am - 1pm

The sessions will cover:

Session 1. Distinguishing complex from simple trauma. The link with childhood abuse.

Session 2. Dissociation as a coping strategy. The spectrum of dissociation.

Session 3. Attachment and dissociation. Conceptualising the traumatised self.

Session 4. Role theory, neurobiology and trauma. Towards a framework for recovery.

(All attendees will receive a 14hr CPD certificate. Participants will need to attend all sessions in order to receive a CPD certificate)

There are a maximum of 20 places available for this course.

Course Facilitator

Giles Lascelle is CEO of Trauma Breakthrough and has over 35yrs experience working with survivors of trauma and abuse in Social Services, the NHS, addiction and rehabilitation, housing, critical incident debriefing, mental health charities, and as a psychotherapist.
