British Science Week grants for community groups

1 October, 2019

To celebrate British Science Week (6-15 March 2020), grants of up to £1,000 will be available for community groups that work directly with traditionally underrepresented people or communities who are not currently involved in science activities.

Funding has been made available from the British Science Association, which runs British Science Week, and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Underrepresented people or communities include:

  • People of black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) heritage.
  • Those on low income or with a disadvantaged education.
  • People with physical or mental health conditions.
  • Remote or rural communities of less than 10,000 people.
  • Women and girls.

There are two levels of grant available:

  • £500 to run an event during British Science Week 2020.
  • £1,000 to run one event or more during British Science Week 2020, and follow-up activities to continue engaging with underrepresented people or communities.

Grants can be put towards hiring audio-visual equipment, booking freelancers, buying materials, publicity, room hire, trainers, paying volunteer expenses, or project-specific staff costs.

Priority will be given to funding applications that meet the British Science Association's goal of making science a fundamental part of society and culture, by:

  • Being embedded in the community, with local people involved in planning or running the event.
  • Showing that science is involved in everyday life, and/or breaking down stereotypes about science.
  • Leaving a legacy after the event has ended.

Applications close at 5pm on Monday 11 November 2019.
