Following a successful seminar series in 2021, we are kicking off 2022 with our first seminar | Housing's role in refugee and migrant integration in the UK.

Access to safe and secure housing is one of the first steps towards leading a self-sufficient and ambitious life for refugees and migrants in the UK.

With a Nationality and Borders Bill that is threatening refugees arriving to the UK via ‘irregular routes’ to be subject to a No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) condition (as explored in our last seminar) and a shortage of social housing that is often cited as one of the key drivers of homelessness. There is a real risk of refugee and migrant destitution rising within the UK. Resettlement schemes such as that for Afghan Citizens are also creating a further need for appropriate housing.

This seminar will address key issues within the housing market, explore existing intervention models from Crisis and ACH and delve into how we can provide inclusive support and housing that aids economic and social integration.

Questions we will explore:

  • How does the housing crisis in the UK and especially in Bristol, impact on the process of the resettlement and integration of newly arrived communities?
  • How can integrated support be given to avoid precarity and the risk of destitution through sustainable housing as a prerequisite to employment and access to vital public services?

Join us and our panel as we aim to bridge the gap between research, policy development and lived experience.

Panel

  • Fuad Mahamed, CEO, ACH
  • Hannah Locke, Best Practice Officer, Homelessness amongst non-UK nationals, Crisis
  • Professor Alex Marsh, School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol
  • Chaired by Professor Bridget Anderson, Director of Migration Mobilities Bristol (MMB)
  • Concluded by Ann Singleton, Reader in Migration Policy, University of Bristol

This is the latest in a series of seminars launched in 2021, organised by ACH and MMB. To find out more about our previous and upcoming seminars please visit our website.
