Milestones Trust
Contract Type:
Contract Details:
6 month commitment
Details of Role:

Milestones Trust is a health and social care charity which supports people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and people living with dementia.  The services are provided through a network of residential and nursing care homes and community services throughout the Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset areas.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of the people we support have expressed that they are feeling bored and lonely. Closure of community services and activities, as well as the inability to safely leave the house for many, has resulted in people wanting more contact with the community in a safe way. We are therefore looking for people to volunteer as Telephone Befrienders or Video befrienders, to call a person, or people we support on a weekly basis, for a friendly chat and check in, boosting their morale and wellbeing. There will also be the opportunity to virtually meet people we support, by attending zoom activity sessions (which are held fortnightly) and then become a telephone/video befriender with someone in the activity group.

The volunteer role will involve:

  • Calling a person or people we support on a weekly basis.
  • Encouraging the resident’s interests and connection to hobbies through chatting about them together. We will ideally match befrienders with people with similar interests.
  • Keeping a log of each phone call and reporting back to service staff.
  • Attending an induction which will help equip you to do the role, and an online safeguarding course which is mandatory.

To be a befriender you will need to:

  • Be kind, a good listener and have the ability to empathise
  • Be keen to find out about their interests and hobbies and discuss them
  • Be patient
  • Have a telephone that can make either voice calls or video calls, that you are willing to use
  • Have a laptop/pad/computer to be able to keep a weekly record of conversations.
  • Be able to volunteer for a minimum of 1 hour per week, for a minimum of six months

The Volunteer Coordinator will complete an induction with you, which will help familiarise you with the organisation and how to be a confident Telephone Befriender. You will also receive support from the Service Coordinator, who knows the individual well that you will be talking to. You will report back to them with updates on the befriending and any concerns that you might have.

You would make a real difference to people’s lives, supporting them to have more interaction with people in the community at a time when it is difficult to interact face to face. If this is something you would like to get involved with please get in touch, we would love to hear from you!

Please note, for all of our volunteer roles a DBS check will be carried out and references will be taken up.
