Want to make a difference and learn more about the food and farming movement at the same time? If the answer is ‘yes’ then read on. 

The Community Farm is recruiting a further two new people to its management committee (MC). You will be joining a strong team of energetic and enthusiastic committee members and our Managing Director. The MC is responsible for governance, rather than operations. The Coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of resilient local food systems, and the purpose of The Farm feels more important than ever. You will be helping take our unique project to the next level.

Who are we and why do we need new MC members?

The Farm is located in Chew Magna, equidistant from Bristol and Bath. It’s in its tenth year. We grow market garden scale organic vegetables on a beautiful site overlooking Chew Valley Lake. We run a thriving veg box scheme and wholesale hub from our field warehouse.

We welcome more than 1,000 people of all ages to visit us each year as part of our Get On Our Land initiative. This is delivered through a busy programme of learning, recreation, and wildlife events, together with year-round weekday volunteering, supported by a grant from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

We employ over 20 staff (14 whole-time equivalents) and have a turnover approaching £1m.

We are making big improvements to our on-site facilities for visitors and volunteers, strengthening our commercial operation, improving The Farm’s wildlife habitats, and expanding our learning and therapeutic programmes. To bring the MC to full strength and ensure continued succession for the future, we need two more energetic souls to help scope and deliver these plans. Could this be you?

What skills are we looking for and why?

Particular skills that can help us include:

  • Experience in business operations and commercial management to help us as we grow in size and aspiration 
  • Experience in people development and human resources to ensure that we develop our staff and volunteer teams in the best ways possible 
  • Experience with running inclusive and accessible social and therapeutic social enterprises to help us deliver our purpose and stay true to our values
  • Experience in market garden scale organic horticulture to support the continued improvement in productivity and nature-friendliness of our growing operation
  • Experience in wildlife as related to British farming to help us develop the wildlife elements of The Farm project

What does the role of MC member involve?

The committee meets every month at The Farm or via online meeting. MC members also participate in sub-groups (supporting the work of paid staff), and may take a lead on specific issues.  On average the role adds up to about one day per month of work, and some committee members choose to do more. What are the benefits of becoming a MC member?

Our existing committee members tell us that they love being part of a project with a deep sense of purpose and values. They describe it as an extraordinary project created by a whole lot of ordinary people. They appreciate learning about food, farming and wildlife. They feel positive about helping demonstrate that a better approach to the production, sale and enjoyment of food is indeed possible. They love the teamwork, the opportunities to spend time on the field as well as ‘in the committee room’, the sense of achievement and the occasional seasonal celebration.

To help decide if this is the opportunity for you, we are running an ‘open morning’ on Saturday 20th June 2020 where you can meet existing committee members, experience The Farm first-hand and learn more about the role. We will follow careful social distancing to keep everyone safe, and the event will be mainly outdoors (with Plan B for inclement weather/further lockdown). Sign-up using the link below.
