Details of Role: 

We are looking for an experienced professional who has worked at board level to chair our Board of Trustees. This role requires strong leadership and chairing ability to support the board to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. You’ll be working with a team of committed, enthusiastic trustees supporting the work of MusicSpace. This is an opportunity to play an important part in the overseeing of a charity that makes a difference to people’s lives through music.

MusicSpace is a charity providing music therapy for people of all ages in Bristol and the South West since 1991. We use music making to help people communicate and express themselves. MusicSpace sees people for music therapy at our Bristol centre, and we also provide an outreach service throughout Bristol, Bath & North-East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire.


As Chair of Trustees at MusicSpace you will be expected to attend and contribute to board meetings every two months and undertake associated work in between meetings as necessary.

As a trustee, you will have a responsibility to:

  • Undertake a leadership role in ensuring that the board of trustees fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the charity.
  • Provide leadership and support to the Director, ensuring that the charity is run in accordance with the decisions of the trustees, the charity’s governing document and appropriate legislation.
  • Liaise with the Director for the drafting of agendas and supporting papers for trustee meetings, chairing the meetings and ensuring that the business is covered efficiently and effectively.
  • Acting between full meetings of the board in authorising any action to be taken as may be necessary, in accordance with agreed policies.
  • Leading the trustees in the development of strategic plans for the charity.
  • Supporting and appraising the performance of the Director to manage the organisation’s staff and premises and, with other board members, oversee the development and regular review of policies appropriate to the needs of a small organisation.
  • Support MusicSpace to achieve its aims and objectives.
  • Ensure the charity functions within its legal and financial requirements.
  • Ensure the continued financial stability of the organisation.
  • Use specific skills, knowledge or experience to support the charity’s operations and its strategic decision making.
  • Take part in board meetings and offer additional time between meetings as necessary
  • Be an ambassador for the organisation.

What MusicSpace is looking for:

We are particularly looking for individuals with the following skills and experience:

  • Experience of Board governance including an understanding of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.
  • Strategic capability and leadership and good judgement.
  • Excellent communication, inter-personal skills, diplomacy and tact.
  • A commitment to the organisation and its objectives.
  • Experience or knowledge of small charities.
  • Ability to commit sufficient time to conduct the role well, including commitments outside regular schedule of meetings.
  • Good, independent judgment.
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

MusicSpace in based in Southville, Bristol which is where the meetings are held.
